“Attack on Ohtaintin Village School in Depayin Township, Sagaing Region Results in 22 Deaths”

According to the People’s Administration of Depayin Township, an attack on a school in Ohtaintin village has left 22 people dead — including 20 students and 2 female teachers — and around 40 others injured.

Based on released lists, among the deceased were 15 female students and 5 male students from Grade 2 to Grade 11. It is reported that some of the victims were children under the age of 10.
According to statements from some local resistance groups, the Ohtaintin village middle school was bombed by the military council around 10 a.m. on May 12 with 500-pound bombs launched from the air.
Following the airstrike, nearly the entire village fled, fearing further aerial attacks.

The incident in which a school in Depayin Township, Sagaing Region was hit by an airstrike, resulting in the deaths of students, shows that the Myanmar military’s acts of violence are continuing unabated. It also signals that the time has come for Thailand to take a leading role in Myanmar’s peace process, according to a Thai Member of Parliament.

Mr. Kannavee Suebsang, a Thai MP, also wrote on his social media page earlier today that Thailand should engage in constructive mediation and dialogue to help build peace in Myanmar.
